In popular culture, queer women rarely get to take centre stage. They seldom headline blockbuster movies and they don’t star in breakout television shows like Drag Race or Queer Eye. Lesbian slang has not become part of everyday conversation, and it can be hard to name a lesbian anthem. Sometimes, mainstream media pretends that queer women just don’t exist.
Girls Girls Girls is here to change all that.
Based on interviews with diverse voices from this evolving community, ranging from baby dykes to queer elders, this verbatim theatre play shines a spotlight on the lives of queer women in Singapore.
How do queer women define their culture? Is their supposed invisibility in public spaces an advantage or a drawback? How do queer women challenge the stereotypes that plague their community, and how do they find themselves and their chosen families in a conservative society?
In conjunction with Pride Month, Wild Rice proudly presents this touching and illuminating tapestry of true stories – from a singer to a stand-up comedian, from a burlesque dancer to a Paralympian, from mothers who raise children to “aunties” who travel the globe. Girls Girls Girls is the myth-busting, soul-affirming oral history project that Singapore never knew it needed… until now.
