Kanarie (2018)
Directed by Christiaan Olwagen
Rating: TBA
When Johan Niemand, gets called up for military service at the age of 18 in 1986 South Africa, he auditions and is accepted to the South African Defence Choir called the ‘Canaries’. Against a landscape where law and religion oppress individuality, Johan and the Canaries have to survive military training and go on a nationwide tour of the country – where Johan starts questioning his religion, patriotism, and sexuality, and where his emerging creativity and passion for music leads to direct conflict with his commanding officers.
Kanarie is being screened as part of Pink Screen at The Projector presented by NBCU and Salesforce – a series of screenings that showcase the talent, struggles and victories of the LGBTQ community across different countries and cultures.
Our aim is to present a curated selection of films that celebrate both personal and universal LGBTQ stories. We believe in film as a source of catharsis and as a vehicle to inspire, motivate and challenge prejudice and established perceptions. Through this series of screenings we intend to not only entertain, but to also spark conversations and connections, to educate and to provide much needed representation and diversity in the current film offerings in Singapore.

The event starts off with a Welcome Address from Yan Phun (COO, 99.co). The proptech portal is today an organization where people have peace of mind to give of their best at work, without being judged for whom they go home to at the end of the day.
This will be followed by an insightful talk by Laurindo Garcia (CEO, Be Inclusive) on how inclusion can be a powerful strategy to attract talents and help SMEs thrive in today’s corporate climate.
A panel of speakers will then share about how they have successfully incorporated Diversity and Inclusion in their respective organisations and how that has been good for business and the fostering of an inclusive culture.
Startup founders, SME business owners, People Ops managers and HR Professionals are highly encouraged to join us at the event and be part of the movement striving to build an inclusive corporate Singapore.
The event ends off with a Q & A from our panel of experts, and the chance for participants to network with one another at the 99.co office.

More than just a medium for creative expression, the literary arts has been an emotional safe space for the LGBT+ community. At various times of our lives, those words, though penned by others, echoed our inner thoughts; they affirmed, encouraged, commiserated and celebrated with us.
Co-organised by Qu’est-ce Que C’est Design and Sing Lit Station, » To Bear Clear Witness « screen print jam sessions are organised, as part of Pink Fest 2019 and in conjunction with a screen print showcase of the same name that pays homage to five LGBT+ writers who have been critically important to the literary history of Singapore.
During the jam sessions, participants may be inspired by the writings of these five LGBT+ writers through the showcase to create their very own screen printed poster.
Fee: $28/participant
The fee includes screen printing supplies and A2 paper. In addition, feel free to bring your own totebags and t-shirts for the screen print jam as well! Just sign up, drop in and have fun!

Close Knit (2017)
Directed by Naoki Ogigami
Rating: M18
After being neglected by her mother, a little girl is taken in by her uncle and his transsexual girlfriend, who create a loving home for her. A delicate film surrounding discrimination and ignorance, done with Ogigami’s signature soul-warming sleight of hand without archetypal scenes of irrepressible conflict.
Close Knit is being screened as part of Pink Screen at The Projector presented by NBCU and Salesforce – a series of screenings that showcase the talent, struggles and victories of the LGBTQ community across different countries and cultures.
Our aim is to present a curated selection of films that celebrate both personal and universal LGBTQ stories. Event Details
Religion is often used as a weapon to frown upon and deride identity and love even though it is meant to soothe and uplift the human spirit. ‘Purushi’ uses religion as a tool to liberate through love regardless of the nature of it.
‘Purushi’ is defined as ‘the feminine’ in Sanskrit. Contextually, it is a play on ‘Purusha’, which means ‘the indestructible, eternal Self’ in Sankrit and ‘husband’ in Tamil. In a world that has made quantum leaps in technology and innovation, love and relationships still struggle to break free from the yoke of what is known as tradition.
‘Purushi’ hopes to illustrate that tradition can be a tool to liberate and not a ball and chain that inhibits emotion and expression. ‘Purushi’ is a classical dance duet with traditional lyrics and music set in a contemporary space and format.
‘Purushi’ parallels our previous work ‘Sakhi’ in PinkFest 2018 by continuing to challenge the stereotypical interpretations of traditional texts, dance and theatre in Bharathanatyam; in an attempt to create an evolved vocabulary that is both inclusive and accepting. This time we explore ‘Shringar’: the love one experiences tangibly, psychologically, metaphysically and spiritually.

In 1600, nobleman Orlando (Tilda Swinton) inherits his parents’ house, thanks to Queen Elizabeth I who commands the young man to never change. After a disastrous affair with Russian princess Sasha, Orlando looks for solace in the arts before being appointed ambassador to Constantinople in 1700, where war is raging. One morning, Orlando is shocked to wake up as a woman and returns home, struggling as a female to retain her property as the centuries roll by.

Through a series of interactive activities, participants will be able to explore the salience and prominence of gender and sexuality in their day-to-day lives. We will facilitate a discussion on the impact of our specific identities on our lives and the way our various identities intersect/interact with one another.
Participants will get a chance to learn from one another, reflect on their own experiences, and explore the ways in which different contexts impact our identity performance. Through these activities, we hope that participants will get to know one another and build community, as well as have an opportunity to reflect on their own personal experiences with identity.
Both facilitators have been trained to facilitate Inter-Group Dialogues and will be using their experience and activities from the Inter-Group Dialogue program to facilitate this experience. We will strive to create a safe space for all participants and stories, names, ideas shared in the space will remain confidential. Participants of all gender identities and sexual orientations are invited to participate!

The Panel Discussion will be on two photographic bodies of work that look at sexuality and gender identity by Charmaine Poh and Grace Baey, moderated by Joleen Loh (Assistant Curator, National Gallery Singapore).
How She Loves by Charmaine Poh is an ongoing series of collaborative portraits featuring queer female couples in Singapore. Made within a studio, the portraits consider the performativity that queer couples adopt as a result of societal codes, and the world they wish to reside in. With the use of wedding props, couples interact with matrimonial tropes and constructed gender roles. Projected onto the backdrop are their parents’ wedding portraits, a reminder of the heteronormative histories that have shaped society, and a juxtaposition to the future they hope to create.
(Un)bound by Grace Baey is a collaborative project that gives an intimate view into the lives of trans men and women in Singapore. Through portraits, journal entries, and scrapbooking, these stories reflect on experiences of struggle, resilience and coping strategies amidst the challenges of gender norms in society. A converging theme in these stories is that of family, and the different pressure points of what we understand and expect of familial ties and family formation.
The panel will be moderated by Joleen Loh, the Assistant Curator of National Gallery Singapore.

Our mission is to create a safe, welcoming, inclusive and uplifting platform and build a diverse community committed to getting stronger together.
This 3-hour workshop serves as a starting point for anyone interested in learning the fundamental techniques of the squat, bench press and deadlift. Intermediate lifters who want to fine tune their technique are welcome too.
For those in the LGBT+ community who are looking to make strength sport a long-term endeavour, perhaps we could even work towards forming a Singapore contingent and competing in Powerlifting in the 11th Gay Games Hong Kong 2022!

We seek affirmation of our beliefs, rather than question them. We are less bendable than ever before. We decide what we want to think, who we pray to, how we vote, and we cut off anyone who opposes our doctrine. But it is by conversing and constantly challenging the status quo that humans evolve. We always have. Were that not the case, we would not have celebrated all the movements that challenged and drove us to new worlds of acceptance, thought, and living.
We’re not done; there’s more to explore, and we specifically want you to participate in this special evening that will conclude in a riotous party. We’re getting LGBTQuuuute tonight.

This Hari Raya Aidilfitri, in an effort to create our safer space, we invite you to celebrate Hari Raya with us. Come mingle with friends and make new(er) ones too. No conversations are too queer and who knows, you may even bring home some food for thought. This is an event to bring LGBTQ+ and allies together. Jointly organised by Jejaka, TheHealingCircle.sg, Penawar & Beyond the Hijab
Jejaka is a social support group for gay, bisexual and queer (GBQ) Malay, Muslim and Malay/Muslim men from 18 to 35 years old in Singapore.
The Healing Circle.sg is a safe space for LBTQI muslims to embrace their spirituality and beliefs in Oneness with God. This space also welcome other faith with the intention of unity in Peace for the world and the entire cosmos.
Penawar strives to be the place of healing and respite for those who are in need of it through their peer-led support group for women and non-men (people who don’t identify as men) who were raised in Muslim households.
Beyond the Hijab is an online platform for Muslim women in Singapore to share stories about their experiences reconciling the demands of their religion and the pressures of the modern world.
We want to create a sense of sisterhood and community, in a world that is becoming increasingly hard to navigate alone.

Orlando (1992)
Director: Sally Potter
Rating: M18
In 1600, nobleman Orlando (Tilda Swinton) inherits his parents’ house, thanks to Queen Elizabeth I who commands the young man to never change. After a disastrous affair with Russian princess Sasha, Orlando looks for solace in the arts before being appointed ambassador to Constantinople in 1700, where war is raging. One morning, Orlando is shocked to wake up as a woman and returns home, struggling as a female to retain her property as the centuries roll by.
Orlando is being screened as part of Pink Screen at The Projector presented by NBCU and Salesforce – a series of screenings that showcase the talent, struggles and victories of the LGBTQ community across different countries and cultures.

The Silk And The Flame (2018)
Director: Jordan Schiele
Rating: M18
Nearing forty and still single, Yao returns to his familial home in provincial China for Chinese New Year to visit his deaf-mute mother and invalid father, whose dying wish is to see his son wedded to the right woman – but Yao secretly wishes to marry the right man instead. A quietly affecting documentary shot in a stark yet mesmerising black & white, THE SILK AND THE FLAME is an intimate portrait of family, tradition and the struggle against conformity.
The Silk And The Flame is being screened as part of Pink Screen at The Projector presented by NBCU and Salesforce – a series of screenings that showcase the talent, struggles and victories of the LGBTQ community across different countries and cultures.
